Hello New Journey!
It's turning Fall in 2018, which means we are gearing up for our Trunk or Treat Outreach Event.
First, I want you to know our Board has been having a great deal of discussion about the purpose of Trunk or Treat and the be best way to steward the
The truth is, the event has grown by leaps and bounds beyond the capability of our church. All said and done we have spent up to $7,000 in one year on this event, without any direct ties to people coming to know Christ or attending New Journey. It's okay to have events that are "no strings attached" and show the love of God without having "an agenda", but not at the expense of evangelism.
That said, we as a Board have determined to cut down the budget of Trunk or Treat to a strict $3,500, which will eliminate inflatables. We also seek to limit the fatigue exerted on our volunteers for such a large event on our church, which averages about 115 teens and adults weekly in worship, while the event takes at least 60 volunteers (more than half of our church). To accomplish this second task, we are hoping to partner with other churches and ministries. Which leads to an important point:
The Purpose of Trunk or Treat: The purpose of Trunk or Treat has fluctuated over the years and here is where we have landed for this year, and the future, if we continue to lead the event:
The purpose of Trunk or Treat is to use the Halloween holiday to promote Christ and connect unchurched people to Local Churches and Ministries.
In that sense, as we look at the overall strategy for New Journey, as well as the resources available, we will categorize this event as one that is a boon to our community as a whole, by becoming a connecting hub between unchurched people and ministries. It is not an evangelistic event, nor a proprietary link to get people to attend New Journey. We will have been successful if Christ has a visible presence through us on a holiday promoting the occult, sexual immorality, and death and unchurched people receive information on local churches and ministires which can transform their lives.
